Hey, got any bacon?

Do these dogs look hungry? The one in the foreground is Duffy, he's our terrier mutt from the local shelter. That regal and yet somehow deranged-looking girl in the background is Rio. She's a shepherd/husky/rottweiler mutt that we've recently taken in. She and Duffy spend most of their time chewing on each other's necks and chasing each other around the house.

Jack, our rat terrier, is not in this picture. He found a safe place and is in hiding.

I was cooking dinner when I snapped this shot. I had two days off work, and took advantage of the time to make a couple of hearty dinners. Last night was grillades and baked grits. Tonight was smothered round steak with onions, green beans and corn maque choux. The dogs have identified me as a soft touch, and the instant they hear a knife hitting a cutting board they run into the kitchen to see what's up.

My family had a normally well-behaved Shepard, Gretchen, that was not polite enough to wait. One Thanksgiving she got her front paws up on the kitchen counter and lapped up the drippings to an entire turkey while everyone in the house was in a tryptophan coma.

Many trips to the backyard later, I think she began to regret it.

Rio frightens me.

D.T, Rio is a sweetheart and is very well-behaved. She is an accomplisheed mooch, however, and we've been warned that she once ate an entire roast off the counter. She's very smart, though, and she seems to be adapting to our house really well.

We got Rio from some family who weren't able to keep her, and it helps that she already "knew" us and our dogs, plus she's 6 years old so she's pretty mellow.

Johnny, our smallest dog had a similar experience with some deep-fryer fat. Ugh.

Poor Jack. Hiding from the insanity.

Funny enough, Jack emerged this morning, ran up to Rio and jumped on her, and then ran away. I think he's testing the water.

awwww cute puppies. I love my furry monsters. Our mix that we got from the pound always lays waiting while I cook in hopes I drop something.

They're a couple of beauties. Don't blame you for the soft touch in the kitchen, though it does help to be firm in the long run.
