Happy Saint Patrick's Day

One of life's great experiences is to be in an Irish pub during a session when this song gets played, everyone singing along and pounding on the tabletops. It's kind of like the scene from Pee Wee's Big Adventure where Pee Wee sings a line from "Deep In The Heart of Texas", only with Irishmen instead of Texans, and in a bar instead of at a bus station.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone. Stay away from the green beer. Oh, and one more thing--in two trips to Ireland I never once saw, was offered, or ate corned beef and cabbage. Lots of lamb and salmon, and yes, potatoes came with everything, sometimes two kinds of potatoes with one meal...but no corned beef and cabbage.

I will break down and serve corned beef today, but I refuse to serve boiled cabbage. No way.

Oh I love this, it reminds me of when I was stationed in Pearl Harbor in the Navy. We found an old pub way off the beaten path that had 2 guys that sang on weekends. The would do Kenny Rogers You picked a fine time to leave me Lucial at least 5 times a night, and the entire audience was required to sing "You bitch, you whore, you slut" after each time they sang that. If you weren't singing, you had things thrown at you!

Fun times...

I am making brisket tonight to go with the Guinness, but it shall not be in the form of corned beef. And yes, there will be potatoes.

I first heard Wild Rover when I lived in Northern Germany, where they sang it in the bars over bier and korn and everyone sang loudly and lustily and banged on the tables and stomped the floor but it was all in German. It was years before I knew the song was actually Irish in origin. What a delight to this lass with her thin trickle of Irish blood in her veins. Thanks for the song, Bubs, and a Happy St. Paddy's Day to ye and all yer dear ones, too, don't ye know!

That's fabulous! Can't wait to see the Emerald Isle myself someday. I do have Irish ancestors and we sing all the time. But that could be the Welsh genes in there too.
