Haunted

The hotel we stayed at, Le Pavillon, is widely reputed to be haunted. You can read a couple of stories about ghostly goings-on here and here. It is a grand little hotel, and we really enjoyed staying there. Each and every member of the staff seemed to go out of his or her way to make sure we were well taken care of.

I'm a little sorry to report that we did not personally experience any ghostly activity while we were there. I do have a theory about why people think the hotel is haunted, though.

In my opinion a lot of this haunting stuff has to do with the fact that guests, returning after having consumed more than a little alcohol, have to walk through a gauntlet of spooky paintings on the way to their rooms. I swear I could see their eyes following me as I passed.

First it was the spooky cats.

Then it was this portrait of the great aunts of the two girls from the Overlook Hotel. I think the one on the left might be a boy dressed as a girl. I'm not sure. I was too preoccupied trying to figure out what the deal was with their hands.

And this last one was right across from our room, silently judging us each time we came or went:

The 2 girls hands are pretty creepy, but look at the lower left hand corner of the cats - A 3-EYED ALIEN!!!

I want to steal that last one for my blog. I've been looking for a symbol for silent, sanctimonious judgment. So thank you.

Except now I'm sure I'm going to see that kid in my dreams tonight - with or without the help of vodka.

She knows sumpthin'. Smug cow.

Man, with the mortality rate being what it was back then? All of the non-cat pictures were probably cursed or haunted before they even dried.

There's some seriously smug pomposity in that last one.

The Overlook twins were the scariest part of that movie.

That hotel is stunning.

The images are definitely creeepy in a good way. In a drunken stupor on my way back to my room, yeah, I'd see them as ghosts.

did you ever find out what's doing with the hands on the deadish looking kids?

Equal creepiness, all around. And the last WAS most definitely judging you, Yankee scum!
