I'm coming out

As an aspiring writer, that is. I wanted to title this post "BIG NEWS" but my bride suggested something more clever. She also insisted I refer to myself as a "writer", which I think is a total hoot. "Bullshit artist" or "lovable fraud" might be more like it. Anyway, I am excited as heck, and feeling blessed and lucky this week.

When I started this here blog in May 2006, I figured it would be a fun diversion while I was recovering from some gut surgery. Along the way I've gotten a few ideas, and thanks to the amazing encouragement and inspiration so many of you have provided, I now have two little things up on sites other than this blog.

The spring 09 edition of Farmhouse Magazine published an essay of mine called "My Day With Antonia". Some of you might recognize it from an earlier appearance here. I cannot thank Katie Schwartz enough. Seriously.

Today my first effort at very short fiction appeared at Six Sentences. It's titled "Every Rose's Thorn". Thank you Katie (again) and Amy Guth for suggesting I send something in there.

Go take a look please? Thanks!

Well done, you! I just finished reading your Six Sentence story with a great deal of glee, and am now heading over to read your longer tome. You da bomb, Bubs!

You're a GOOD writer, Bubs, or I sure wouldn't be here all the time waiting for your next post. Wear the title proudly! I got a hoot out of the short-short story, and I'm headin' to the next one, too. Bravo!

But... but... what ever happened to the old lady the tranny was caring for? Oh, my, Bubs. WHAT a story that was about Antonia. Yep. You're a writer.

I'm proud of ya, Bubs!

Your six sentences were a thing of beauty and I'm going to read your essay at Farmhouse. That's quite a feat. I love your writing.

Wow! These were great! How exciting!

One question though, you've just kind of outed this blog as belonging to you (by name), something you've been pretty careful not to do in the past.

Lulu, you're absolutely right. A few different things have come together in these last couple of weeks so that I don't particularly care any more. I still won't mention my department by name, and it's not like I reveal any confidential or sensitive information here. I wanted to write under my own name, and decided I didn't have much to be afraid of and would just take my chances.

Megan, thanks!

Freida, thank you! I'm flattered.

Wren, thanks--I don't know what happened to the woman she did the in-home care for. I should find out...

Barbara, thanks!

I said it once and I'm saying it again, "This is damn awesome writing!" I included you in my Crazy Eights.

And I don't think you need a name like "Turbo Dog", Bubs is even more cool.

Congratulations! That's a little hard to write since I just got my first rejection. But it sounds like you are on your way to fame and fortune. I'm really happy for you and a little pissed too. Ambivalence is a hard thing to admit. No really I'm really really happy for you, really.

I loved the Farmhouse piece, you showed that real true crime is indeed a skanky tranny in the park, instead of some false glamour that Dominic Dunne tries to conjure. Your Six however struck a little too close to home for me, so I just clicked "six-tacular," though I won't leave a comment on the page.

ALL writers are bullshit artists and/or lovable frauds. Some just get paid for being so. ;-)

You beautiful gay bastard, those were goddamn funny!

my question on Every' Rose's Turn (maybe it will get answered in the sequel) - was she mad he didnt leave the seat down?

I liked both pieces, but that six sentences thing was especially great. Nicely done.

Oh Bubs, I am so pleased to see you branching out like this.

Talent - you've got it baby, use it, flaunt it, live it.

More than good, Bubs. Considerably so. And you'll get even better. Trust an old fart who once was "Sports and Religion Editor" [It had neither category] for a Left Coast Lit Mag in the 1970s and 1980s.
Before the owner of the "Papa Bach" bookstore relocated and reopened in Wyoming outside Grand Tetons Natl. Park, we were getting submissions from all 50 states, Europe and Asia. A few are now "names" in the Lit Game [tellya who privately]. Anyhoo, you be damn fine writer. Trust an old shrink, or is it "old fart?"] just once. Excelsior!

Great job, Bubs! I'm going to have to spend some time on that site. It's perfect for my limited attention span.
