As it turns out, Crispin was probably in character as Rubin from the (at the time, unreleased) movie Rubin and Ed. Here it is:

The compound is under construction. Gathering enough plywood, galvanized tin and used trailers takes time, not to mention stockpiling all the shotgun ammo, canned goods and bourbon.

Please do. Somewhere I read, recently, that Crispin was in character as "Rubin" from a movie he'd just finished called Rubin and Ed. The movie was filmed in the 80's but didn't get released until the early 90's. This was even more bizarre than some of Andy Kaufman's appearances once he started wrestling women.
