R.I.P. CBGB

BBC NEWS Entertainment Legendary punk club CBGB closes

Sad news today, but the spirit lives on. As Patti Smith says in this NY Times article:

"Kids, they'll find some other club," Ms. Smith insisted during her set. "You just got a place, just some crappy place, that nobody wants, and you got one guy who believes in you, and you just do your thing. And anybody can do that, anywhere in the world, any time."

I considered going to this show on Sunday. But I knew it would be mayhem, and crowds are annoying now that I'm old.

It would've been something. I understand that neighborhood has changed a whole lot (what hasn't?) in the last 20 years.

Time marches on.

BAH on that.

Even though I knew it was coming.

And somehow the idea of CBGB reopening in Las Vegas just doesn't help at all. Even if it opens in a crap neighborhood like North Las Vegas.

Although, having it nestled in somewhere between the Gold Spike and the Western might be ok.

CBGB belongs to a particular time and place, Chicago pizza doesn't travel well for God's sake, how's 1970's New York punk gonna make it in Vegas....

BTW, read the Lester Bangs bio if you have not already. There is a link to it in my books read this year list.
