Manliest Christmas ever...

The initial frenzy is over...the second pot of coffee is percolating, and I'm still pondering the great mystery of how teenage girls who normally have to be dragged out of bed at 11 in the morning can suddenly, and without an alarm, wake up before 6 am. Even the dogs were excited.

We all came downstairs and there it was--my manliest Christmas ever. There was a Bettie Page magnet set, and socks with flaming dice on them, and Bookers bourbon, and a new Leatherman tool and folding knife and all kinda good stuff. Whew. Sadly I can't hit the Christmas bourbon (a real treat with some strong, manly coffee at 7 in the morning, believe me) because it's time to get ready for work.

I never feel more secure in my manliness than when I'm wrapped in pretty furs and jewelry.

I just came back from dinner at my brother's house. What a great evening. Thanks for the holiday wishes, and hope y'all had a good time today.

I just rented the movie about her - I hope to learn something useful.

Merry Christmas!

Don't worry, Bubs-- I drank for you. I made a rare exception to my "never drink before 8 pm" rule and had mimosas with the wife at about 1:30.

I was reminding Mrs. Yen yesterday of our first Christmas together two years ago. We'd been dating about a month and a half. I had worked my teaching job, then my waitering job that day, gone over to her apartment and fallen asleep. I slept in that morning-- until 8:30. When I got up, she was on her third mimosa. I kind of wondered what I'd gotten myself into. I was to find out that she doesn't drink that much, actually. Still, it was fun to give her a hard time about it.

CP: You're talking about the Notorious Bettie Page? I thought it was brilliant--it had just the right tone, and Gretchen Moll's performance was amazing. I like the idea that Bettie Page has been able to reap some benefit after all these years.

Johnny, the mimosa is a wonderful drink. Have you ever tried a bellini? They've replaced mimosas in our champagne drink lineup.

No, I haven't-- what's in a bellini?

My favorite-ever mixed drink is a Manhattan, up. There was an older bartender named Frank at the Gingerman who moved to Arizona about ten years ago to take of his elderly parents. He made killer Manhattans. I still miss them. I actually swore them off until I get my son off to collge. And that's only five years, six months, five days, 3 hours, 4 minutes and 8 seconds away. But hey, who's counting?

Maybe Frank will have moved back by then.

I don't really care for Manhattans--something about the mix of vermouth and bourbon hits me wrong.

A bellini is basically a bit of peach nectar (or sometimes apricot, but peach is better) and maybe a dash of lime juice and sugar, topped up with champagne and garnished with a mint leaf. The first time I had one was at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

That sounds pretty fun. I'll have to try it.

I think the trick with Manhattans is not to overdo the sweet vermouth-- just a few drops. I also like bourbon and water. My brother mixes it with coke, the philistine.
