I hated 1980

I got tagged by Johnny Yen, who asked a few of us to pick 5 songs from the year we turned 18 and get nostalgic over them.

The starting point for this exercise is a site called Pop Culture Madness.

Anyway, here are my five songs from 1980, and my nostalgic thoughts on each:

1) Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes
I hated this song. I hated everything about pop music in 1980. That's why I dressed funny and listened to punk rock.

2) Do That To Me One More Time - Captain & Tennille
I hated this song. I hated everything about pop music in 1980. That's why I dressed funny and listened to punk rock.

3) Sailing - Christopher Cross
I hated this song. I hated everything about pop music in 1980. That's why I dressed funny and listened to punk rock.

4) It's Still Rock and Roll to Me - Billy Joel
I hated this song. I hated everything about pop music in 1980. That's why I dressed funny and listened to punk rock. Where the fuck did Billy Joel get off even uttering the words "new wave"?

5) Funkytown - Lipps Inc.
I hated this song. I hated everything about pop music in 1980. That's why I dressed funny and listened to punk rock. At least I get to enjoy this song now, in an ironic way, after buying it as part of a compilation that I got for $6.99 at Target.

Anyone who wants to relive their glory days, consider yourself tagged.

Can you see me leaping to my feet and cheering? Because that is pretty much what I wanted to say about the songs from my year as well.

I had to search hard to find some that I liked. Should have just used your method, you clever thing.

I love your passion for pop music!

I saw this same thread on a blog a few weeks ago, and have been thinking that I need to play, although I think you've already used the angle I was planning on taking. Seriously, of the top 25 songs from the year I turned 18, I owned one of them on cassette.

My finger as always far from the pulse of the nation...

Have a good Memorial Day weekend.

I'm LMAO!

My god, 1980 sucked even worse, pop music-wise, than 1979, didn't it?

I have that compilation too-- I got it for the Ohio Players' "Fire" and The Commodores' "Brick House."

I hadn't discovered alternative music yet, so I was pretty much a stoner chick listening to Zeppelin, The Who and The Rolling Stones with a smattering of Neil Young, Cream and Black Sabbath. I guess I knew I liked loud music, but hadn't found the stuff that really fit yet.

These are my glory days, not then, so ;)

A big pro-punk man myself, I still always liked Funkytown, too. It's kind of funny. . .

I love that you hated them Bubs. The important question though is do you still mysteriously know all the words to each of them?

Even the foulest musical memory I can conjure comes complete with automatic lyrics at the ready. Thanks brain of Dale.

Dale, how DOES that work!? MizBubs talks about that very phenomenon--she can still remember every single lyric to "Billy Don't be a Hero" and "Seasons in the Sun"

Erik, I agree with you that these are much more my "glory days" than 1980. I feel like I'm pretty much at the top of my game. Whatever that means.

Ten, did you have a black "The Loop" tee shirt? Did you wear accessories made from roach clips?

Johnny, that's the one!

Mob, what year did YOU turn 18? I'm curious what the one song was you owned.

Barb, I'm not clever. Just cranky

I have to admit that I love that stupid Pina Colada song. I don't know why, I just do. Yet I hate Pina Coladas. Curious.
