Carnage at the compound

MizBubs, dynamic early riser, made a gruesome discovery this morning.

An unknown rabbit, clearly lacking even
basic Darwinian survival instincts, decided to make a nest in our yard. Our yard that is a big playground for two terriers. And she built the nest less than a foot off to the side of the well-worn path that the dogs use to haul ass from the back porch to the far corner of the yard when they see squirrels running along the back fence. None of our neighbors have dogs or cats, so you'd think that given a choice most rabbits would pick a yard that does not smell like predator poo.

So, while I was sleeping soundly, MizBubs was on dead bunny detail in the back yard. The body count was three, but she thinks some of the wounded might have crawled off.

By the time I came out with my coffee, all that was left was a bare patch in the lawn, a little hole, and some cottony tufts drifting like little tumbleweeds across the grass.

Circle of life, yo.

Oh dear, not the sort of thing you want greeting you in the morning. But the dogs were just doing their job and the rabbits would not have made it long anyway, given their poor judgement.

What a dumb bunny!

(Sorry, couldn't help it. Too much sex.)

your dogs should be complimented for strengthening the rabbit gene pool...oh, and mizbubs also deserves props for the mop-up.

pOnk, MizBubs is like a chick version of Victor the Cleaner. She takes care of bidness.

D-Cup, heh. I know, first thing I thought of as well. And good luck with that sex stuff.

Barbara, this happens about ever few years. We'll go that long between episodes, and then some other dumb animal will decide to nest in our killing field. In 1998 it was bunnies, and our standard poodle did the job. In 2005 it was the world's stupidest mother possum, and Duffy eviscerated two of them before my youngest forced me to trap the remaining 12 possums and release them in the wild. My solution was to turn him loose under the shed, but she put the kibosh on it.

We have a similar situation with birds that insist on building nests right above the dog's food bowl. Circle of life, indeed.

Personally I blame Barbara Bruderlin. Her profile pic looks a little like Glenn Close.

Poor stupid bunnies. A few years ago one of our dogs got into a nest of baby rabbits. Oh, the carnage. I refer to it as the Bunny Massacre of 2004.

Awwww. Poor widdoh dumb buns. Always makes me sad to hear things like that, but yeah, circle of life. And I bet the dogs were proud of how well they protected their people from the killer-rabbit threat.

Wonder how they'll do with wayward alligators?

I imagine the bunny having a Larry the Cable Guy voice, turning to the others and saying this otta get er done!

We have rabbits all over, and I love them. Our dogs leave them alone now, since we chastised them for killing a few early on living here. When we got a cat recently, he did the same thing, but only wounded a baby rather than killing it. We got it and the kids were all psyched to have a pet, but the poor thing, which did not appear to be injured much, died.

That's my rabbit tale and I;m stickin' to it.

That fur is sad. Did you save any rabbits' feet? jk

Freida, my better half had those carcasses deep-sixed before I had a chance to retrieve a lucky charm. Maybe next time.

Barbara, no kidding.

Skylersdad, hah! The only thing more ridiculous would've been if she'd made the next on top of the grass, with duct tape.

Wren, I will keep my dogs well clear of the gators. My dogs have a fine fighting spirit, but they'd be badly outclassed. I know it, but they don't.

Suzi, thank you for stopping in! Welcome! Yeah, dogs are good for that aren't they?

Coolcat, I thought one of the dogs smelled like gasoline this morning...

Dr. Zaius, don't feel too bad. Dogs need fresh meat.
