Calling Young Homemakers

My friend Dena sent me a link to A Subscription for Despair over at yet another entertaining midwestern blog, A Hole in the Head.

The writer talks about a stack of Women's Household magazines from the mid-1960's that he bought at a yard sale. Whew. It really does look bleak.

That got me thinking. Miz Bubs recently got her first issue of Craft magazine, and she and the Mad Seamstress have been busy planning new projects. We found out about Craft at the Renegade Craft fair in Wicker Park earlier this year--a hipster arts n crafts show.

So here's what I want to know: how are all these tattooed, Bettie Page-looking, "I'm foxy and crafty" chicks (and the men who love them) going to seem 40 years from now when someone buys a stack of Bust magazines at a yard sale?

Thank you, Joe. I definately feel a kinship with these women. I learned sewing and crocheting from my grandmother, who looked just like these women. It was the most fun I had as a child. My Grandmother and her friends had a great time exchanging toilet paper covers and pillows with Barbies sewn into them so they looked like ball gowns. They were not sad, and most even worked outside the home. They expressed themselves with the idioms of their time. We use skulls. Won't that seem bizarre in 40 years? Judge not, lest ye be judged...

But I love judging! It all sounds like good clean fun. With skulls.

I don't know how people will feel about "Bust" 40 years from now, but I can tell you I would give anything to be crowned "Queen of the Weight Watchers Club." What a terrific honor. I wonder if she gets her own float in the municipal parade?

If I didn't get to emborider pink skulls on my black pot holders I'm not sure what I would do.
