IT'S TIKI TIME!

Yes, friends, it's tiki time!

I just got an email from the newly-relocated Tiki Terrace. They've moved to what I've been told is a bigger, cooler space at 1591 Lee Street, Des Plaines. The place is run by three brothers who are all good guys, and they have a real love for all things tiki.

Anyway, their grand opening in the new digs is Wednesday, June 11. Here's what I got from the email:

Wed, June 11, The Official Tiki Terrace Grand Opening! Make sure to stop by on our Grand Opening! We are giving away 100 tiki mugs, raffleling the official Grand Opening-Hand-Carved tiki by the Zuziak brothers, offering a $3.00 Mai Tai all day, featuring music and dance entertainment by the Barefoot Hawaiian, and more! Its a once-in-a-lifetime Tiki Terrace event and you are invited!
MizBubs and I will be there around 7:30. We look forward to having a couple drinks with you. Seriously, short of a dollar a gallon drop in gasoline prices, or shooting off some fireworks, can you think of a better way to start your summer?

Behold, the Admiral Peary

Admiral Peary

(for two)

Mix the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour over ice in a wine glass. Drink. Repeat.

Congratulations to Dr. Monkey Von Monkerstein!

Admiral Peary won with a whopping 26 votes. I suspect some monkey business may have been involved, but it's still a good name.

Thanks everybody!

Name that drink: Final Four

UPDATE:

THE POLL CLOSES IN 15 MINUTES. YOU ONLY HAVE A FEW MORE MINUTES TO MANIPULATE THE VOTE IN FAVOR OF YOUR FAVORITE DRINK NAME.

Thank you, thank you for all the swell suggestions and comments.

I was not able to act on this yesterday; I was selling my labor to corporate America and spent 12 hours looking snappy in a black suit, providing security for a convention downtown. Now I'm back, rested up, and MizBubs and I just reviewed our choices.

We decided that this calls for a poll. Here's the description of the drink one more time:

One 5.5 oz can of Kern's pear nectar
Juice of one lime
4 shots of coconut rum

The drink was remarkably sophisticated. Of course it reminded me of summer and sunshine, but not in an overly tropical drink kind of way. The pear nectar provided a rich mouth feel, and was a perfect vehicle for the lime. It was delicious, and MizBubs presented it simply, on the rocks, in a wine glass.

Vote early and often!

Name That Drink!

Tonight MizBubs worked her magic and surprised me with a tasty cocktail. Once I saw her mixing, and caught a whiff of fresh lime juice, I was mighty glad I bothered to put together a decent dinner while she was at work:

A mixed green salad with roasted pecans and sun dried tomato vinaigrette dressing,
Grilled chicken breasts,
Pasta tossed with sauteed zucchini and red peppers in a light cream sauce

But anyway, I was here to talk about the drink. Yeah, it's always about the drink here, isn't it? Unless it's about the pork product.

So here's the drink:

One 5.5 oz can of Kern's pear nectar
Juice of one lime
4 shots of coconut rum

The drink was remarkably sophisticated. Of course it reminded me of summer and sunshine, but not in an overly tropical drink kind of way. The pear nectar provided a rich mouth feel, and was a perfect vehicle for the lime. It was delicious, and MizBubs presented it simply, on the rocks, in a wine glass.

The problem is, we don't have a name for it.

Readers, you have never let me down when I've asked for assistance. Remember, you gave us the Lazy Bastard.

MizBubs, girl wonder, is sure taking care of me this weekend. First she hits me with the drink you see pictured above, and now she's keeping our garden beautiful. We've spent the day, again, ignoring housework that desperately needs to be done in favor of staying outside.

The Mount Prospect farmer's market is in full swing, and by the time we dragged our lazy asses out of bed today a lot of stuff was sold already. We still did well. MizBubs got me to clean up my bicycle yesterday, so we rode our bikes to the market, and then stopped by the bike shop after. Oh, yeah. I decided to add some flair to my otherwise humdrum old bike.

Check out my new horn:

Yes, it is in fact a squeaky alligator head. I've always wanted one ever since I saw it on the shelf today.

Now I must go. There are peaches and blueberries waiting to be turned into a cobbler.

Time for a drink

Tonight's drink:

The Effen Sexy

2 Parts Effen Black Cherry Vanilla
A splash of Simple Syrup
A splash of Creme de Cocoa (clear)

Shake and pour into cocoa rimmed martini glass
Garnish with a cherry

It's a nice nightcap and dessert rolled into one.

I just got done reading Shadow of the Bear: Travels in Vanishing Wilderness by Brian Payton. It's fascinating book about bears and our relationship with them, their place in our mythology and their status in the wild. I've just started reading Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq. I'm kind of a military history geek, and I'm reading this as a follow-up to Dereliction of Duty: Johnson, McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam.

The author of Dereliction of Duty is one H.R. McMaster. At the time he wrote it he was a Major in the US Army. It's a scathing portrait of what happens when high ranking military officers cave in to political pressure, and I found plenty of parallels between the 1964 Chiefs of Staff and the Rumsfeld Pentagon.

H.R. McMaster is now a Colonel, and commands a unit in Iraq. He's been mentioned in a few accounts as being one of the US commanders who's doing the job right. He also figures prominently in Fiasco.

Once I'm done with Fiasco I've got to find some fiction to read. I've been on a non-fiction tear since May, and I need to quit. I'm open to suggestions.
