Good times

Hey, where'd everybody go?

I miss em, the crazy bastards.

The party Saturday was a blast. We had a great time, and I can't say enough to thank everyone for showing up and having a good time with us. It made us very happy to see all of you. Our guests are an extremely generous bunch. We ended this party with possibly more booze than we started with, we've got new tiki accessories and a vintage album by cocktail comedian Woody Woodbury titled "Booze is the Only Answer." Beautiful cheesehead pastry chefs showed up bearing sweets. People brought desserts and more desserts, and more wine. To those of you who couldn't be here, well, hopefully next time?

I think, counting kids and teenagers, there were about 60 or 65 people in and out. We managed to have enough food, enough ice, more than enough beer and sangria (anyone want to stop by for a drink or three?) and everyone seemed to get along fine. It's always fun to introduce people who've never met and then see them talking away later on. We had bakers, writers, cops, artists, entrepreneurs, sign language interpreters, engineers, internet musical geniuses, social workers, unofficial mayors of Chicago, IT professionals, HR marketing professionals, stay home dads, stay home moms, sophisticated European businessmen and mysterious beautiful women who asked not to be identified on this page in order to protect their privacy.

Here's the thing about parties. You do all this work, you get ready, make lists, clean, cook, all that stuff. You set up places to eat and drink, you arrange chairs in a way that you hope will encourage people to socialize. You worry about how you're going to deal with all the garbage when your cans are already half full from housecleaning, and all the food packaging you got rid of. You wonder if anyone will show up, because this might be the time that people realize they're just tired of your bullshit.

Then the party starts, and at some point--Saturday it was about an hour in--the number of guests hits a critical mass and the party starts. And, quickly after that, you lose control and the party becomes almost a living thing on its own. The chairs you set out get moved around, people end up hanging out in places you didn't think they would, your guests start to find their way around your place as they get comfortable and things just seem to run themselves. I love that ride.

So...it turns out that there's always enough food, and if it all gets eaten that just means people liked it. You can always find a good-humored kid who'll take a buck or two to climb into your garbage and recycling cans wearing a pair of your daughter's rain boots and jump up and down, compressing your trash into more manageable piles. When that one defective firework misfires and nearly hits a young girl in the head, setting her hair ablaze, her father doesn't punch you in the face and she actually turns out to have been excited about the whole experience. Lord, I hope so anyway.

See you later, alligators.

The dangers of fireworks

Key phrase to remember: "after leaning over a professional grade firework."

Bottom line? Backyard fireworks are not safe, but if you do decide to stage an illegal amateur fireworks display in your backyard, for God's sake, keep your mannequins and your melons at a safe distance.

Yep, we're getting ready

Cousin Clete is all excited. He took the gate off the neighbor's dog run and he's getting all set up for the big party this weekend. He felt cheated when we didn't throw a party last year, and he's promised to make up for lost time.

Differences between men and women: 4th of July Edition

According to MizBubs, it would never even occur to a woman to do something like this. Which I think is too bad.

Here comes Independence Day

Right down Independence Day Lane...

Well, I'm not as much of an html retard as I thought. I'm html handi-capable, as it turns out, and I was able to restore my beloved links without much trouble once I was awake enough to concentrate. Now I have a Katie Schwartz meme to attend to, and a backlog of stories involving peacock throttling freaks and random other stuff that's caught my eye.

The next couple of days are shaping up to be fun but busy. I've been working day shift, from 8:30 to 5pm, since May, which has been a nice change of pace. Today is different. I have to go in at noon to meet the other honor guard officers so that we can practice marching up and down the square in preparation for the 4th of July parade tomorrow. Fortunately our uniforms, while damn good-looking, are not nearly as spectacular as Liberace's.

I'm working nights tonight as part of a crime suppression unit, which means we'll basically be going out to local problem areas looking for gang members and obnoxious drunks. Then, first thing tomorrow morning, it's back at work for the parade.

My mom called me yesterday after finding this quote in the Sunday paper:

Ninety-nine successive years have we set aside one whole day for killing small boys, putting out eyes, rending limbs and scaring horses as a glorification and symbol of the American idea of freedom.

--Chicago Tribune editorial, July 4, 1875

Yes, it seems that people think of me when the conversation turns to fireworks and accidental injury.

Now, sadly, the combination of work schedules and a mid-week 4th mean that we're not having a big party this year for the holiday. And that means Cousin Clete won't be building his chain link rocket launcher:

Implosions, rubble piles and progress

This is a picture of what's left of the Stardust, one day after the implosion. You can see the little slice of white trash hell on earth that is Circus Circus in the background.

See the McDonalds in the upper right corner? Part of the vacant lot next to that is the site of the former Westward Ho, home of the 99 cent, 3/4 pound MEGA DOG, the 99 cent margarita, and a 5 cent cup of coffee. In addition to being the place in Las Vegas that I've most often been mistaken for security, it was the scene of the first badly-rendered version of George Harrison's "Something" experienced by me and MizBubs. Ultimately we would experience many, many badly-rendered versions of "Something", but none was as magical as that first time at the Ho. Oh, yeah--it was sung by an Elvis impersonator who was partly out of uniform.

I got the picture of the rubble pile from Vegas Today and Tomorrow. If you click on this page you can see all the new projects either proposed or under construction. There are plans for a new Maxim casino, a Harrods-themed casino, and expansions of the Tropicana and Caesars Palace. The mind reels.

I've started going through my Las Vegas files again. I have a bidness trip planned in May, and the nerves are starting. Slowly, but surely--I'll be in full twitch by late April. There are new places I have to find out about, and sadly there are places I've had to scratch off my list because they no longer exist: the million dollar horseshoe at Binions, the Sky Lounge at the top of Polo Towers, the tragically short-lived Taboo Cove at the Venetian. I could go on, and if you get a few drinks in me I will.

I'll sign off with a little video clip, because if there's one thing we love at the compound, it's fireworks:

Hot Dog

I have got to train my dogs to do this:
